What is contents insurance?

Contents insurance covers the cost of replacing the things you love if they’re damaged, lost or stolen. This includes your jewellery, TV, laptop, artworks, sporting equipment and other valuables.

If you’re unsure whether something falls under home or contents insurance, then imagine if your house tipped upside down. Items that fall out such as jewellery, laptops, mobile phones and carpets are generally covered by contents insurance.

Generally, home insurance covers what is fixed to the building, such as walls, windows and the ceiling.

What's covered?

Key benefits

  • New-for-old replacement of your contents, regardless of age. For example, if your 15-year-old TV is stolen, you can buy a new one with similar features if we choose to replace it. We may choose to repair it or pay you the cost to repair or replace it instead.disclaimer

  • Cover for damage from natural events, such as floods and bushfires is automatically included.disclaimer

  • Cover for electrical motor burnout and offsite power surges. For example, if lightning from an electrical storm causes a power surge that damages your fridge, the cost of replacing it is covered. disclaimer

Optional benefits*

  • Accidental loss or damage at home. For example, if the kids are playing inside the house and knock a drink onto your laptop and damage it, we’ll repair or replace it, or pay you the cost to do so.disclaimer

  • Cover for contents away from home and anywhere in the world. For example, if you’re traveling and your bag containing your mobile phone, camera and $250 cash is stolen, then we’ll replace everything or pay you the cost to do so (subject to content sum insured limits).disclaimer

  • Specified valuables cover for items worth more than $3,000. Say your house is broken into and your engagement ring worth $10,000 is stolen - you would be covered for the full amount as long as you listed it as a ‘specified valuable’ as part of your cover.disclaimer

*These can be removed to reduce your premium.

How to get a quote

1. Be prepared

Before you begin, think about the contents in your home and estimate how much it would cost to replace everything if it was damaged, lost or stolen.

For example, start with your bedroom and tally up the cost of replacing everything: the bed, wardrobe, jewellery, electronics, etc. Then work your way through each room in your house. The total is your ‘sum insured’ amount.

The Insurance Council of Australia contents calculator can also guide you.

2. Personalise and save

Our policies are flexible, so you can tailor the cover to suit you. It doesn’t cost extra to pay fortnightly or monthly instead of annually.

You can also reduce your premiums by:

  • Removing accidental loss or damage at home and/or contents cover away from home.
  • Choosing a higher excess.
  • Taking out more than one policy with ANZ. For example, take out home and car insurance and receive a discount.
  • Checking if you qualify for any of our discounts. For example, ANZ Breakfree Package holders may be eligible for discounted premiums for the first year.

3. Get started

Once you have your sum-insured amount ready to go, it takes about five minutes to complete a quote, online or over the phone.

It’s valid for 30 days, so you can email it to yourself to review the details and come back when you’re ready to finalise your insurance.

Make a claim

We know making a contents insurance claim comes at an extremely stressful time, so we’ve made the process as easy as possible. With 24/7 support available online and over the phone from our local claims centre from 8am-7pm AEST, we’re here when you need us most.
