Contents Insurance 101

Accidents, theft and loss happens. So it makes sense to protect your valuables with contents insurance. It’s important to take out contents insurance that provides full replacement cover for your belongings and having the right sum insured amount.

What's not covered?

Some of the things that aren't covered include:

  • Loss and damage caused by erosion, rust, corrosion, gradual deterioration, wear or tear.
  • Fixtures and fittings and other contents in a strata property that are insured by the body corporate.
  • Loss or damage caused by vermin, insects or birds.
  • Equipment used to earn an income.
  • Glassware, crystal, crockery, mirrors or china while in transit.
  • Previous damage that has not been repaired.
  • Sporting equipment while it's in use.

If your concerns have not been resolved to your satisfaction, you can lodge a complaint with the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) who provides fair and independent financial services complaint resolution that is free to consumers. 

Time limits may apply to complain to AFCA and so you should act promptly or otherwise consult the AFCA website to find out if or when the time limit relevant to your circumstances expires.The AFCA contact details are:

If your contents suffer loss or damage in an insured event and your claim is accepted, we’ll choose to either: repair or replace an item; or pay the cost of its replacement or repair. Subject to total sum insured and contents with specific limits e.g. limit of $1,000 applies for motor vehicle accessories and spare parts. Refer to the PDS for a full list of contents with specific limits. Electric motors are covered if under 15 years old.

We won't cover damage caused by an event excluded under any section of the policy. For example, we won’t cover loss when you can't establish the cause or loss or damage to sporting equipment while it is being used.

We do not cover loss or damage caused by a bushfire or grass fire, flood or named cyclone that occurs within 48 hours of the start of your policy. If an item is damaged by an insured event and your claim is accepted, we’ll choose to either repair, replace or pay you the cost to do so.

We do not cover the cost to repair or replace an electric motor if it is older than 15 years old. Electric motors are covered if under 15 years old.

Contents cover for up to 120 consecutive days away from home. We’ll pay:

- up to the contents sum insured whilst in Australia or New Zealand
- the lesser of 25% of the sum insured or $15,000, whilst outside Australia and New Zealand.
