What identification can I use to open a bank account?

If you're a new customer, you'll need to provide: one form of Primary ID or two Secondary IDs. Examples of Primary ID

  • Australian photographic driver's licence or learner's permit
  • Australian Passport (current, or one that has expired within the past two years)
  • Foreign passportdisclaimer
  • Australian state/territory government issued Proof of Age card
  • Government issued National Identification card

Examples of Secondary ID

  • Birth certificate (can be issued by an Australian State or Territory, or Foreign Government)disclaimer
  • Australian or Foreign citizenship certificatedisclaimer
  • Australian Medicare card
  • Australian School attendance letter issued by principal to person under 18, recording residential address and period of attendance (less than 3 months old)
  • Australian Taxation Office (ATO) assessment notice (less than 12 months old) with name and address

If your identification document is written in a language other than English, you must provide a translation into English by a translator who is accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters. An accredited translator is a translator accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.
