International Money Transfer FAQs

You will need to be an ANZ customer to request an ANZ International Money Transfer. You will also need to tell us the following:

  • The currency you want to send.
  • The amount you want the recipient to receive.
  • The receipient's full name and address.
  • The recipient’s account number and bank details, such as a SWIFT code, BIC (Bank Identifier Code) or branch number (depending on the destination country).
  • IBAN is preferred for near real-time payments to the United Kingdom, and for most payments to Europe and selected other countries. A routing number is required for payments to the United States (e.g. Fedwire or CHIPS).

You can use an ANZ transaction account or ANZ credit card*.

Joint accounts set up as 'anyone to sign', are also eligible to send an ANZ International Money Transfer.

*Important information about using an ANZ credit card: Additional fees, charges and interest may apply if using an ANZ credit card for an ANZ International Money Transfer. A Correspondent may also charge a fee when making the payment to the recipient’s account and the recipient's bank may charge fees for receipt of the payment.

ANZ credit cards can only be used to send an ANZ International Money Transfer via ANZ Internet Banking (not ANZ Phone Banking).

You can send money to over 250 countries and in more than 30 currencies using ANZ Internet Banking or ANZ Phone Banking.

When setting up a new payee in ANZ Internet Banking, the available countries will appear in the destination country dropdown.

ANZ Internet Banking:

To help keep your accounts secure, your daily limit for ANZ International Money Transfers can be set between $1,000 and $10,000.

You can change your limit in ANZ Internet Banking, by clicking on 'Payments' > 'Change my Pay Anyone Limit'.

To increase your daily limit and send up to $25,000 in ANZ Internet Banking, you will need to download the ANZ Shield app.

ANZ Internet Banking for Business:

The maximum daily ANZ International Money Transfer limit is $150,000, even if your profile has a higher daily limit.

ANZ Phone Banking:

There is no maximum limit on transactions from your account. However, please be aware that an ANZ International Money Transfers cannot be made from a credit card using ANZ Phone Banking.

However, please be aware that an ANZ International Money Transfers cannot be made from a credit card using ANZ Phone Banking.

No, there is no minimum transfer amount.

It is not possible to schedule a recurring or future dated an ANZ International Money Transfer.

No. ANZ International Money Transfers made from an ANZ credit card are treated as cash advances, and cash advances do not earn any ANZ Reward or ANZ Frequent Flyer points. Refer to ANZ Credit Cards Conditions of Use; ANZ Rewards Program Terms & Conditions and ANZ Frequent Flyer Rewards Terms and Conditions for further information.

Fees and Exchange Rates

ANZ processes an ANZ International Money Transfers through a worldwide network of Correspondents. Correspondents may charge fees which are usually deducted from the transferred amount. For some currencies and countries, ANZ will cover the Correspondent fee for an ANZ International Money Transfers via ANZ Internet Banking and ANZ Phone Banking.

A Correspondent fee is a fee that is charged by another bank or agency chosen by ANZ to effect payment of the an ANZ International Money Transfer.

When you request an ANZ International Money Transfer, we will provide you with an estimate of the Correspondent fee as part of your quote.

You can choose to make your ANZ International Money Transfer using one of the options:

  • You Pay

This is the total amount deducted from your account. It includes:

  • the converted amount at the applicable foreign exchange rate; and
  • any fees and charges (such as the ANZ transfer fee and estimated Correspondent fee).
  • Recipient Gets

If you want the recipient to receive an exact amount, select Recipient Gets. ANZ will calculate how much you need to pay, based on:

  • the converted amount at the applicable FX rate, and
  • any fees and charges (such as the ANZ transfer fee and estimated Correspondent fee).

Note: The Recipient Gets option is only available when sending foreign currency. If you send AUD, you can’t choose a Recipient Gets amount.

Foreign exchange rates change constantly. When you request an ANZ International Money Transfer, we’ll lock in your quoted rate for 10 minutes, giving you time to complete the transfer.

If the 10-minute period expires before you finish, the quoted rate will expire and you’ll need to request a new foreign exchange rate.

Country Specific and Transaction Status Information

Some countries have additional requirements for an ANZ International Money Transfer.

Examples include:

  • Vietnam: Recipient’s passport or citizen card number is required.
  • South Africa and Bangladesh: Recipient must contact their bank to claim funds.
  • China: Payments related to trade should not be sent to individuals.
  • IBAN preferred for: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, French Polynesia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Mauritius, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, New Caledonia, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia and United Kingdom.

For ANZ Internet Banking, whenever you submit an International Money Transfer, you will receive a lodgement number and a receipt number.

Note: For ANZ Internet Banking for Business, overseas transfers must be authorised on the same day they are lodged. Due to fluctuating rates, if transfers are not authorised on the same day they will expire.

Errors, Delays and Rejections

It is your responsibility to ensure the payment details you provide are correct. ANZ does not check payment details, and if they are wrong your transfer may fail or the funds may be sent to the wrong account.

If you realise you’ve entered incorrect details for your ANZ International Money Transfer processed via ANZ Internet Banking or ANZ Phone Banking, or if you need to change or cancel a transfer after submitting it, please contact ANZ as soon as possible by calling ANZ’s International Support Centre on 1800 681 683 or, if you are overseas, +61 3 8565 7229 (call costs apply), weekdays 8am – 5pm AEDT/AEST.

Before processing is complete: In some cases, we may be able to amend the details, cancel the transfer, or request the funds be returned from the recipient’s bank.

After processing is complete: Once the transfer has been fully processed and sent to the recipient’s bank, it may be very difficult or impossible to amend, cancel, or recover the funds.

You can review the details of your submitted payment in Internet Banking under View Past Payments.

If the recipient’s bank rejects the ANZ International Money Transfer, the payment will appear as rejected in your payment history.

  • Select the transaction in your payment history.
  • Click 'View details' to find out who rejected it and why.

If your ANZ International Money Transfer seems to be delayed, missing or you think you may have sent it to the wrong recipient, contact ANZ as soon as possible.

Receiving Money

To receive an international payment into your ANZ account, you will need to provide the sender with:

  • Your full BSB, Account Number ANZ Account Name.
  • ANZ SWIFT code: Either ANZBAU3M or ANZBAU3MXXX will be acceptable.

The time it takes for funds to arrive depends on the country and financial institution sending the transfer. Only the sender can track the payment and confirm when it was sent.

If you’re waiting on money that hasn’t arrived, please contact the sender directly for an update.

 ANZ may be unable to process an incoming International Money Transfer for several reasons, including (not limited to):

  • Incomplete or missing information.
  • The sending financial institution cancelled the payment.
  • Your ANZ account is closed.

A SWIFT code is a unique identifier for a bank or financial institution used in an ANZ International Money Transfer. It's also called a Bank Identifier Code (BIC).

Correspondent fees

ANZ processes ANZ International Money Transfers through its worldwide network of Correspondent banks. Correspondent banks may charge additional fees and will generally deduct these fees from the total value of the payment. For certain currencies and countries, ANZ may cover the Correspondent fee for ANZ International Money Transfers via ANZ Internet Banking and ANZ Phone Banking.
