Key considerations

  • Diversification and industry range
International markets can open up opportunities to invest in industries that are less common or unavailable in the Australian market.
  • Capital gains
International shares have potential to provide capital gains. If you buy shares at a certain price and then sell later at a higher price, you can make a profit.
  • Dividends
If your international shares pay dividends, you’ll receive regular payments which are a percentage of company profits.
  • Liquidity
International shares can have high liquidity, meaning there's usually demand and supply on the market and they’re easily traded.

  • Currency risk
International shares are converted to and from the local currency (foreign exchange fees apply) when you buy and sell, so movements in currency could enhance or reduce our returns.
  • Political and regulatory risk
International shares can be vulnerable to the political climate, and any economic and regulatory changes, in the countries you invest in.
  • Market Risk
Shares can drop in value, meaning you will make a loss if you sell your shares at a lower price than what you purchased them for.
  • Tax laws
Income from foreign investments is treated differently to Australian investments, so you may need professional tax advice.
  • Dividend Risk
Dividends are not guaranteed and a company may decide to reduce or even stop paying dividends at any time.
