Exchange Traded Funds
Buy the market, instantly diversify and enjoy a simple and low-cost way to build your investment portfolio.
One-step diversification
Buy the market
Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) can help you quickly diversify your investments across one or more market indices or asset classes – including bonds, shares, derivatives, currencies and commodities.
Accessibility
ETFs are easily accessible because they're traded on the exchange, just like shares. Even though an ETF may have multiple underlying assets, it's bought or sold in a single trade with a single brokerage fee. This one-step process makes it an easy way to both enter the market and diversify your investments.
Performance
ETFs sometimes track a market index, such as the S&P/ASX 200 for Australian shares. Generally, ETFs that track an index are 'passive' and will aim to follow the index, rather than trying to outperform it. If you invest in an index ETF, your returns are likely to reflect the performance of that index.

ETFs and unlisted managed funds
While there are similarities between ETFs and managed funds, they are different. One of the main differences is that unlike managed funds, ETFs is listed and tradeable on the stock exchange. Like shares, ETFs can reflect their real-time value throughout the day, whereas managed funds are priced daily, weekly or even monthly.
ETFs tend to follow and index or the value of a commodity rather than try to outperform it, and as a result tend to have lower management fees than managed funds.
Key considerations
Benefits
- Diversification
With a single trade, an ETF can diversify your investment portfolio. - Low cost
ETFs have low fees and can be traded in one transaction with a single brokerage fee. - Ease of entry to market
ETFs allow beginner investors to quickly and easily enter the market and diversify. - Convenience
ETFs are available to trade on market during trading hours.
Risks
- Tracking error
In some cases an ETF might not perform as well as the index, asset or asset class that it aims to tracks. This is called a 'tracking error'. Tracking errors can be the result of fees or a slight difference in strategy from the original index, asset or asset class. - Currency/country risk
ETFs that include assets traded overseas may inherit the risk of currency fluctuations and local market conditions. - Volatility
ETFs are vulnerable to market conditions and may decrease in value. - Liquidity
Under some market conditions, ETFs have low liquidity and may be harder to buy and sell.
