Sharemarket basics

What’s the difference between a market order and a limit order?

market order is an order to immediately buy or sell at a price which is no more than 3 steps less (in the case of an instruction to sell the financial product) or 3 steps more (in the case of an instruction to buy the financial product) than the last sale price when the Order is processed. There’s no guarantee the price will stay the same, so the trade price could be different to what you expect.

limit order allows you to buy or sell shares at a specified price. A buy limit order can only be executed at the limit price or lower, and a sell limit order can only be executed at the limit price or higher. If the share price doesn't reach your limit, the order may expire without being executed.

What is the ASX?

The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) is one of the world’s leading financial market exchanges and the primary exchange in Australia, offering investors a range of services including listings, trading, clearing and settlement. It oversees compliance with its operating rules, promotes standards of corporate governance among Australia’s listed companies and helps educate retail investors.

What is Chi-X Australia?

Chi-X Australia is a more recent addition to the Australian sharemarket. Introduced in 2011, as an alternative exchange to the ASX, Chi-X Australia uses its own trading system, offering the full suite of companies that are listed on the ASX. Unlike the ASX, it doesn't offer opening and closing auctions.
