Gambling guidelines
We’ve changed the way we treat gambling transactions on personal ANZ credit cards to help minimise potential customer harm from gambling when using a credit card.
In accordance with clause 8.2 of the ANZ Credit Cards Conditions of Use, transactions which ANZ identifies as being for gambling or gaming purposes can be declined on your personal ANZ credit card if at the time when you attempt to transact:
- You have used 85% or more of your credit limit, OR
- The identified transaction, if processed, would take your balance to 85% or more of your credit limit.

Example 1
Sam has a limit of $5,000 on her credit card. She has spent $4,250 on purchases including groceries, flights, lottery tickets and petrol. She tries to place a $10 bet on a horse race using her personal ANZ credit card. This gambling transaction is declined because she’s already reached 85% of her credit limit. Sam will need to pay off some of her credit card balance before she can make another gambling transaction on her credit card.
Example 2
John has a limit of $5,000 on his credit card. He has spent $4,200 on purchases including clothes, bills, concert tickets and online betting. He tries to place a $100 bet at a casino using his personal ANZ credit card. This gambling transaction is declined because while he has only spent 84% of his credit limit, this bet will take his balance to 86% of his credit limit. John will need to reduce the amount of his bet or pay off some of his credit card balance before he can make another gambling transaction on his credit card.
