Commodity Insights, Autumn 2024

The 2023 calendar year delivered patchy results throughout Australia. But overall it was another year of above average production. Most striking was the late season heavy rains that didn’t do near as much damage to winter crops as one might have expected. Late cyclones and bushfires also sprang up towards the end of summer causing serious damage at local levels. Some areas missed out on everything altogether.

Commodity Insights, Summer 2023

It’s probably the same every year, but 2023 seems to have been something of a roller coaster in Australian agri. And for all of the ups and downs,I wonder which is in front? The answer probably depends on where you are and what you do. In an off and on season, the El Nino declaration finally came. No surprise or new impact to those landscapes that were already very dry through much of the season.

Commodity Insights, Spring 2023

Global demand for our commodities as a collective remains strong. In many parts of Australia, seasonal conditions are ‘not without a chance’, despite the forecast and onset of dry in some regions. It’s always all about the spring and the outlook is a cause for caution. Supply seems to have caught up with cattle and sheep markets, but the same does not appear to be true for grains which is enjoying a level of price recovery. And what of current interest rates and the sector’s record level of debt?
