Pause before sharing your
personal information
Ask yourself, do I really need to give my information to this site or this person?
If it doesn’t feel right, don’t share it.
What is personal information?
Personal information is anything that can be used to uniquely identify you, either independently or in combination with other data. It might include your name and address, medical records, bank account details, photos, videos or even information about what you like, your opinions and where you work.
Why is it important?
Personal information is currency for criminals online and with it they may be able to access your bank account, obtain credit cards or loans in your name, compose more convincing fake emails (phishing) and guess your passwords.

What can you do?
We're working every day to help keep you secure online, however it's also your responsibility to keep yourself secure. To help you, here are some suggestions of simple steps you can take to further improve your level of security.
- Pause before sharing personal information like your date of birth, address and bank details and don’t share it if you don’t need to or it doesn’t feel right
- Adjust your social media privacy settings to ‘private’ where possible
- Avoid sharing personal information when using free public Wi-Fi
- Never provide your personal or security details, including customer IDs or passwords in response to any email – even if it looks legitimate – without contacting the sender through official contact points (e.g. published phone number) to verify the request
