What is home and contents insurance?

Home insurance (also known as building insurance) generally covers the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home following an insured event. This includes natural disasters such as a bushfire, flood, earthquake or storm. You can also add on optional cover for human-related damage, such as accidental breakages.

Contents insurance covers the cost of replacing what’s inside your home if it’s damaged, lost or stolen. It also covers items kept outside but on your property, such as a bike. You can take out just home insurance, just contents insurance or a combined home and contents policy.

If you’re unsure whether something falls under home or contents insurance, then imagine if your house tipped upside down. Items that fall out such as jewellery, laptops, mobile phones and carpets are generally covered by contents insurance. Generally, home insurance covers what is fixed to the building, such as walls, windows and the ceiling.

What's not covered?

Exclusions include:

  • Loss and damage caused by erosion, rust, corrosion, gradual deterioration, depreciation, and wear or tear.
  • Fixtures and fittings and other contents in a strata property that are insured by the body corporate.
  • Damage caused by any event that doesn’t occur within your insurance period.
  • Limited cover for loss or damage suffered if your home is unoccupied for more than 120 consecutive days.
  • Loss or damage caused by vermin, insects or birds.
  • Equipment used to earn an income.
  • Loss or damate to glassware, crystal, crockery or mirrors while in transit.
  • Previous damage that hasn’t been repaired.

How to get a quote

1. Be prepared

We’ll need to ask some questions about your house to provide a quote. This includes when your home was built, what materials it’s constructed from and whether you have any major renovations planned. Having this information handy will speed up the process.

2. Personalise and save

Our policies are flexible so you can tailor the cover to suit you. It doesn’t cost extra to pay fortnightly or monthly instead of annually.

You can also reduce your premiums by:

  • Removing accidental loss or damage at home
  • Removing contents cover away from home
  • Choosing a higher excess
  • Taking out more than one policy with ANZ. For example, take out home and car insurance and receive a discount
  • Checking if you qualify for any of our discounts. For example, ANZ Breakfree Package holders may be eligible for a discount on their premiums for the first year
  • Receiving a discount on your premiums if you're over 50

3. Get started

If your building is totally destroyed by an insurable event and your claim is accepted, we’ll choose to either rebuild or pay you the cash equivalent. Full building replacement cover will apply unless the buildings are in a dilapidated condition at the time of a claim. In this case we may settle your claim for a reduced amount in accordance with our legal rights.


We do not cover loss or damage caused by a bushfire, flood or named cyclone that occurs within 48 hours of the start of your policy.


If your contents suffer loss or damage in an insured event and your claim is accepted, we’ll choose to either: repair or replace an item; or pay the cost of its replacement or repair. Subject to total contents sum insured and any applicable limits. Refer to the ANZ Landlord Insurance Product Disclosure Statement (PDF 709 kB) for a full list of conditions, limits and exclusions that apply.


We do not cover the cost to repair or replace an electric motor if it is older than 15 years old. Electric motors are covered if under 15 years old.


We will pay up to the legal liability limit shown on the Policy Schedule for any one incident or series of incidents arising from the same cause. This amount is inclusive of any legal and associated costs relating to the claim made against you.


If chosen as an optional extra, we’ll cover unintended and unexpected loss or damage at home for the cover you have chosen.


Contents cover for up to 120 consecutive days away from home. We’ll pay:

- up to the contents sum insured whilst in Australia or New Zealand
- the lesser of 25% of the sum insured or $15,000, whilst outside Australia and New Zealand.


Valuables that exceed $3,000 can be insured at a value selected by you. Valuable items include jewellery, watches, collectibles and items containing gold and silver.
