Financial wellbeing: the new wellness kid on the block

TV presenter Liv Phyland’s journey through the ANZ Financial Wellbeing Program to feel the most confident and comfortable financially than ever before.

Everyday our social feeds are flooded with wellbeing posts. Recommendations, guidance and support surrounding exercise, mindfulness, sleep and food. What you won’t see or hear much about however, is Financial Wellbeing.

So I started working with ANZ, the only bank I’ve ever banked with, to better understand and improve my financial wellbeing. What I didn’t perhaps expect to happen in that same period? Consecutive challenges, hurdles and setbacks, both personally and professionally. But hey, that’s probably the most realistic reflection of life…unpredictable.

Which is exactly why I think it’s so incredibly important to consistently work on and nurture your overall wellbeing. It can allow you to celebrate and enjoy the highs and successes, and to feel strength and resilience in times of adversity.

So although the last six months wasn’t exactly what I thought it was going to be in terms of job opportunities and money flow, I’m so glad I didn’t shy away from making my financial wellbeing a focus because I realised how much I still needed to do.

  • I got a better understanding of where I’m at financially (ANZ Financial Wellbeing Calculator).
  • I educated myself about my finances. I became less ignorant about where my money was going and unnecessary expenses coming out of my account
  • I re-evaluated my goals when times get tough, lessening any pressure or guilt I felt

The outcome? I’ve felt the most confident and comfortable financially than I ever have before. I’ve learnt that being financially “well” doesn’t mean my bank account has to be greedily overflowing. It doesn’t mean I’m driven by money. It doesn’t mean I’m obsessing over my bank balance. And it doesn’t mean I am going to become a less generous person (a genuine fear I had).

It simply means my mindset and understanding of my finances is healthier, allowing more space for opportunities and energy to flow. It means that now, I can plan for my future while being prepared for a rainy day, and it means reaching money goals I never thought would be realistic to myself.

While I am a strong believer in money not necessarily being the source of happiness, my mindset towards it can alleviate a lot of stress and allow me to enjoy the simple things in life. And why should we ever feel ashamed to feel or speak about that aspect of our lives? To be able to provide for ourselves and our family. To pay mortgages, rent and bills. To travel. To afford nourishing food.

So here’s to being as holistic as possible and prioritising all areas of our wellbeing; physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and to the new kid on the block…financial. I think you will feel better for it.
