Request to close a credit card account or
decrease a credit card limit

What you need to know

If you're the account holder, you may use this page to request:

  • The closure of your credit card account
  • A reduction/decrease in your credit card account limit

Credit card account closure

If you're the account holder you can request a card account closure in the following ways:

  • Call us on 13 22 73 (or +61 3 9683 9999 from overseas)
  • Log on to Internet Banking and select: 
        - Contact
        - Card Enquiries
        - General Card Enquiries
        - Request for Account Closure (from Enquiry drop-down menu)
  • Drop into any ANZ branch in Australia
  • By post, submit your written request to:
        Locked Bag No. 10
        Collins Street West Post Office
        Melbourne, Victoria 8007
    Your submission will need to include the following information:
        - The credit card account number you wish to close
        - Full legal name of the account holder
        - Signature of the account holder as authorisation for closure
  • Use the form below
    We may call you back and ask some security and authentication questions (including confirmation of the account number you wish to close) before providing you with a payout figure (see below for more details).

Please note, to close your credit card account you will need to pay the full outstanding balance, including any accrued interest and fees. This amount is known as the "payout figure" which may change daily.

You can obtain your payout figure at any time by calling us on 13 22 73 (or +61 3 9683 9999 from overseas).

Once your account is closed, you will receive written confirmation from us by post confirming your account has been closed, as well as your closing account statement.

In certain circumstances, a person authorised to act on behalf of the account holder may close an account holder's credit card account in the above ways.

Credit card cancellation

If your account is not paid in full on the day you request closure
then we will only be able to cancel your credit card. If your card is cancelled, you will:

  • Continue to accrue interest and fees until the outstanding balance is paid in full
  • Need to pay at least the minimum monthly payment by the due date each month until paid in full
  • Be responsible for any transactions debited to the credit card account in accordance with any recurring transaction request or other standing authority or any other authorised link to the credit card account. For recurring payments, you must contact the merchant to arrange another payment option or to cancel the recurring payment altogether
  • Receive written confirmation about card cancellation
  • Continue to receive monthly statements until the outstanding balance is paid in full.

After your credit card is cancelled and you have paid the full outstanding balance including any accrued interest and fees, your credit card account with us will be closed.

Decrease/Reduce credit limit

If you're the account holder you can request a decrease or reduction of your credit card limit in the following ways:

  • Call us on 13 22 73 (or +61 3 9683 9999 from overseas)
  • Log on to Internet Banking and selecting: 
        - Contact
        - Card Enquiries
        - Decrease your Credit Card limit
  • Use the form below
    We may call you back and ask some security and authentication questions (including confirmation of the account number you wish to request a reduction/decrease on) before reducing your credit limit. If you have requested a new credit limit that is lower than the current balance of your account, we will also discuss the next steps for your request to be actioned

Please note that when selecting your preferred new credit limit, it can be equal to but must not be less than the minimum credit limit applicable to your credit card. The minimum credit limits for your credit card can be found at anz.com.au/personal/credit-cards/.

If you are experiencing financial hardship, please contact Customer Connect on 1800 252 845 between 8am and 8pm AEST/AEDT, Monday to Thursday, and between 8am and 7pm AEST/AEDT Friday.

In certain circumstances, a person authorised to act on behalf of the account holder may close an account holder's credit card in the ways above.

By submitting this form, you acknowledge and agree to ANZ:

  • Collecting your information for the purpose of decreasing your credit card limit, cancelling your credit card, or closing your credit card account, as requested in the form below; and
  • Contacting you by phone (or email in the event we cannot reach you by phone) to assist with making the change you have requested to your credit card or credit card account.
