Singapore's public transport is plentiful and varied. You have the option of using metered taxis, the MRT subway system or the convenient bus services, or you can get around on the water by ferry or bumboat.
Rents are high, regardless of how near or far from the city centre you are. Be sure to ask if the prices quoted include all taxes. The Straits Times has listings of rooms available in private flats. Singapore's medical institutions are first-rate and generally a lot cheaper than in the West, and there are clinics catering specifically to expats.
It's also worth knowing that when exchanging business cards offer yours humbly, name-side up, pinching the card between the thumb and forefinger of both hands. Be sure to carefully read the details on any proffered cards, and don't put them away before the offeree does.
