Flexibility
My Flexibility Survey
In November 2006, more than 7,000 employees participated in the My Flexibility Survey. The survey gave an overview of the commitments ANZ employees have outside work, as well as how flexible working arrangements could assist them to achieve greater work life balance. It found that 52% of respondents benefited from ANZ's flexible working arrangements and the preferred flexible working arrangements were flexible start and finish times, carer's leave and working offsite.
In response to the survey findings and other feedback regarding flexibility, ANZ piloted a My Flexibility initiative in selected businesses over a six month period, ending May 2007. Specifically, the initiative road tested flexible work practices in various businesses throughout ANZ. Under the My Flexibility pilot, employees and managers were encouraged to explore, discuss and agree on flexible working arrangements.
Pilot outcomes are currently being reviewed in conjunction with required supporting infrastructure, with a view to commencing a phased rollout of My Flexibility over ANZ businesses in the future.
Flexible work arrangements
ANZ offers a number of flexible work arrangements to help employees find a greater work life balance. These arrangements are agreed with an individual's line manager and include:
  • Flexible working hours, eg flexible start and finish times
  • Working offsite
  • Job sharing which allows two employees to voluntarily share one position and still receive the same entitlements as full-timers, pro-rata to the number of hours worked
  • Extended unpaid leave or career breaks to pursue personal development or family commitments
  • Guaranteed part-time work for employees aged 55 and over, giving them the opportunity to take a gradual approach to retirement or make a career switch
  • Lifestyle leave which allows employees to tailor their salary over the year to provide up to an additional four weeks leave for any purpose
  • Flexible long service leave which gives employees the option to take double long service leave at half pay.
Family friendly policies and programs
We have a range of family-friendly policies and arrangements for our people in Australia.
  • Paid parental leave - In December 2004, ANZ increased the financial support it provides to employees who are the primary caregiver of a child, from 6 to 12 weeks pay, irrespective of length of service.
  • Unpaid parental leave - available to all full-time and part-time employees irrespective of length of service, where our employee is the primary caregiver of the child. Parental leave can be taken for up to 12 months for newborn children or adopted children under five. Employees may also apply for an extension of parental leave for up to an additional 12 months.
  • Carer's leave - available where a full-time or part-time employee needs to provide care and support for an immediate family member/s or member/s of their household. The leave is treated as part of normal sick leave entitlements.
  • Part-time work child care policy - full-time employees who are pregnant or caring for a child under the age of five are eligible to apply for part-time work under these provisions. They retain the right to return to a full-time role after expiry of the part-time work childcare period. Alternatively, employees may choose to work part-time on a permanent basis where a suitable opportunity exists.
  • Childcare - ANZ has engaged the services of an external professional childcare provider to operate seven childcare facilities and services for our employees throughout Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and New South Wales.
  • Nursing mothers' policy - we support nursing mothers to breastfeed and express milk by providing flexible work schedules by mutual agreement, agreed privacy areas and arrangements for carers to be involved.
