Reducing emissions

We measure, and set targets for minimising, our greenhouse gas emissions as part of our Environment Management System.

Electricity is the biggest single component of ANZ's greenhouse gas generation. We have also introduced initiatives to reduce emissions caused by our use of motor vehicles.

Our 'tool of trade' car fleet policy now specifies fuel efficient 4-cylinder cars as the preferred standard vehicle for car fleet leases. The Corporate Banking business is also converting its entire car fleet pool to 'hybrid' vehicles, which use a combination of petrol and electric motors.

Going carbon neutral

In addition to our ongoing work to improve our energy and fuel efficiency, ANZ has announced plans for its Australian and New Zealand operations to be carbon neutral by the end of 2009.

As part of our approach, we will seek to acquire our electricity, which accounts for the majority of our carbon footprint, from renewable energy sources.

While this approach involves substantial up-front investment, it is ultimately the more environmentally sustainable approach. By investing in renewable energy rather than merely purchasing carbon credits, the bank can reduce its carbon emissions while at the same time support the financing needs of a variety of renewable energy projects.

However this initiative is only part of the work we need to do to reduce our environmental footprint. We will continue to audit and improve our energy efficiency, water consumption and waste management.

Carbon Disclosure Project

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) provides institutional investors with a ‘one stop shop' to information about how over 1000 global companies are responding to the challenges posed by climate change.

More information about CDP

We provided a submission to the CDP in 2006 and were honoured as ‘Best in Class' for our approach to climate change in a report released by the CDP. ANZ was also one of 50 FT500 companies included on the CDP Climate Leadership Index.
